San Antonio, TX

We’re spending 3 nights in San Antonio at Fort Sam Houston Army Base. Some bases have RV parks and retired DOD employees are allowed to stay at some of them. This is our first and we have a reservation at an Air Force base in South Dakota.

We spent the day touring downtown San Antonio – the Alamo and Riverwalk. First we took a boat ride on the river to get a feel for the area. The river never floods thanks to several flood gates and is kept clean and oxygenated by waterfalls. We walked over to the Alamo and took a combination walking tour and audio tour. The walking tour was a guided tour of the battle field area and some history about the Alamo. Then went back to the Riverwalk for lunch and after lunch we picked up our audio tour of the standing buildings of the Alamo.

Rain, rain, go away!

We left early this morning from Baton Rouge going to Houston, TX.  We knew there were bad storms in our path and we got an early start.  We saw on the news tonight that LSU was closed and flooded.  Good thing we left early.  We made it over the Mississippi River bridge and the long bridges that go over the bayou.  Then it started to rain and we exited at the first exit we could —  truck stop/casino.  We were there about an hour waiting out the storm.  The wind blew a plastic trash barrel into Silver Girl — no damage.  The parking lot flooded and another barrel went floating by.  I understand that train cars were blown off a RR bridge in New Orleans.  Glad we stopped!

The rest of the day was good.  We stopped at West Lake RV Resort in Katy, TX.  We were supposed to stop at Stephen F Austin State Park but it’s closed due to the storms and they have no power since Saturday.

One day — Four states

We started in Florida, drove through Alabama and Mississippi and finally stopped in Louisiana, mostly in the rain and thunderstorms. We made two wrong turns in the final 5 miles to the campground. The first took us over the Mississippi River – no big deal just exit, turn around in a gas station and go back over the river. The second wrong turn was Garmin’s fault. For future reference, when you see a sign like this, DON’T TURN!

You know those K turns or 3 point turns you learned in Driver’s Ed? Well try making one with a 31 foot trailer on a residential street in the pouring rain. The rain didn’t seem bother Benn but since I was outside giving directions . . . drowned rat!

We finally make it to the campground at Farr Equestrian Center. It’s 2 miles from LSU. There was a baseball game at LSU so the campground was about half full. Tonight it should be mostly empty.

We walked to the levy to see the river and then took a drive into Baton Rouge.

River’s Edge Campground, Holt, FL

It was a long day but we made it to River’s Edge Campground in Holt, FL.  We normally only drive 200 to 300 miles but we wanted to get as far as we could today and drove 400.  We knew the roads were good and we’d be gaining an hour — Holt is in central time zone.

River’s Edge is a nice, old Florida campground with lots of trees and it really is on the river’s edge.  It’s the Yellow River and it’s really high right now.  Benn saw a very large slash — think gator — so we didn’t get too close to the edge.

All pack and ready to go . . .

Well we’re mostly packed and ready to go tomorrow.  We did the important stuff — hair cut and teeth cleaned.

Silver Girl is stuffed to the gills (I didn’t even know she had gills) with clothes, food and a lot of stuff we’ll probably never use.  We have stuff stored in crevasses I didn’t even know she had.  I know there are stores in the rest of the country but …   Well, we’ll have a good time!
