Great Sand Dunes National Park

We haven’t had good internet for several days. For the next 5 days, we’ll have internet but spotty cell service. We spend 3 nights at Lathrop State Park near Walsenburg, CO and then 2 nights at San Luis State Park near Great Sand Dunes National Park. We can see the sand dunes from our campsite. It’s a good thing we didn’t try to stay in the national park. The sites were really small.

Great Sand Dunes NP is just that – a great big sand dune in the middle of 2 mountain ranges. Sand is washed down from the San Juan Mountains to the west in several streams and from storm winds. Then winds from the east pile the dunes back on themselves creating North America’s tallest dunes.
