Water softener install

Most of the places we travel have hard water. So we decided early on that we’d need a water softener for Silver Girl. Benn started researching right away. Our wet bay (for our non-RV friends – that’s where all the water and waste components are held) is too small to install the softener. So it would have to be installed in the next bay. This bay is really small so we had to find a unit that would fit. Holes would have to be drilled in the walls of the two compartments for the pipes. This was Benn’s biggest fear and the reason this project took months. But he did a really good job and once the first hole was made the project was complete in a week.

First hole
Water in — water out

We put PVC pipe in the holes with caps so the water hoses would be protected. The current water system had to be cut in two places and softener installed in the middle.

First cut where the water comes from the spigot
Second cut at the filter where the water goes into RV

Here’s the finished wet bay with with cut off valves and water meter so we know how much water we’ve used.

Here’s the second bay with the softener. Much easier than we first though — just 2 little leaks.

Benn says it’s really a still for making moonshine. We’ll be selling it to augment our retirement income.

Finished still, err water softener

PS..

I cut Benn’s hair Tuesday. I was surprised how well it turned out. So if you see us on the road you can buy moonshine and get your hair cut.

Summer 2020 ???

This was supposed to be our Summer trip for 2020. Since we should have been at stop #5 today, it ain’t happening. Sorry Mum, you were stop #6 on Mother’s Day. Hopefully we can make if this Fall.

This is the new plan. We have to be at stop #3 to have service work done on Silver Girl in mid-June. If everything looks OK, we’ll try to catch up with our camping reservations in July in Montana. If not, we’ll stay on the east coast or head home.
